[Spread-users] Managing connect timeouts under Perl

I'm using the Perl module by Theo Schlossnagle to try to talk to Spread.
Everything works fine, except that if the spread daemon goes away,
connection takes a little over three minutes to timeout. In the context in
which this will be used, this is pretty much a deal-breaker.

Is there any way to control the timeout on connection, so that the connect
will return much more rapidly (ideally, a few seconds at most) if no
connection can be made?
