FYI, I added a step to my build procedure so that in between running "configure" and doing a "make install" I modify the daemon/config.h file to replace

	/* #undef WORDS_BIGENDIAN */

with

	#define WORDS_BIGENDIAN 1

and all interoperability seems to be fine between 4.0.0 and 4.1.0 and ppc and x86-64 platforms.  At least I have a temporary solution.
