I'd be happy to work with you on it as it would help with automating the
differences between cvs and release, however I'm not sure it would have
avoided this problem, as I did have a set of 'instructions' that I
followed, including the perl script I was sent to modify the build.xml
file so it wasn't a 'typo' by hand, but a 'automated error' :-) Once I fix
the perl script, it should generate the correct entry. 

What I think I'll conclude is that I should release an actual
spread-src-3.xxrc1.tar.gz tar ball and not just a CVS tag for release
candidate testing, so errors in the actual tarball are found prior to
release instead of afterwards.
